Young pianists enjoying a lively duet

I have 25 years' experience teaching budding pianists and keyboard players. I welcome all ages, from beginners 6 or 7 years old to people pursuing a rhythmic retirement (most of whom are beginners, too)!

For happy duets like the one being played by the twins shown here my upright piano is often the best. However, I also have a grand for when music or pupils are more ambitious.

Piano for All!

Happy young pianists with certificates to prove their achievement

I compose to suit each learner's tastes and technical needs. For the pianist shown here I based a piece on a simple tune that she made up. For teachers and pupils further afield I've composed a collection called Countdown to Grade One, published by Crotchets & Quavers.

Once a piece gets under their skin pupils often find that it comes to their fingers easily! To ensure good technique I sometimes film those fingers in action (hence the excellent hand and body postures you see on this page)!

Musical eyes are important, too, and I foster sight reading skills with a range of modern and traditional methods.

I generally teach in my studio near North Walsham but sometimes visit pupils within a few miles if circumstances keep them at home.

Lessons can be fun and they also give you the chance to shine! Some young children enjoy the thrill of taking exams and picking up certificates!

One of my pupils has passed his grade 6 exam with Distinction at the age of just 12, while Jim, in his eighties, has passed with Merit at the top grade (grade 8)!

A girl enjoying her piano lesson

As for musical brains, theory and composition often feature in lessons. Some of my keenest composers, like the girl shown here, have even scored hits with The Worldwide Song Project!

Including catchy songs in lessons can help to boost interest, hence my naughty nose picking song! Once a youngster's interest is roused the gift of music is theirs for life and they take it with them wherever they go. In the words of a parent,

Thank you for all your dedication in teaching Ian here in Norfolk. He loves his piano and will continue in Australia.
