From small beginnings to great success

Piano for All!
Lessons can be fun and they also give you the chance to shine! Some young children enjoy the thrill of taking exams and picking up certificates!
I have 30 years' experience teaching budding pianists and keyboard players. I welcome all ages, from beginners 6 or 7 years old to people of parent and grandparent age (most of whom are beginners, too)!
For happy duets like the one being played by the twins shown here my upright piano is often the best. However, I also have a grand for when music or pupils are more ambitious.

I compose to suit each learner's tastes and technical needs. For the girl shown here I based a piece on a tune she sang me. For teachers and pupils further afield there's my lively collection Countdown to Grade One, published by Crotchets & Quavers.
To ensure good technique I sometimes film those fingers in action (hence the excellent hand and body postures you see on this page)!
Musical eyes are important, too, and I foster sight reading skills with a range of modern and traditional methods.
As for musical brains, theory and composition often feature in lessons. Some of my keenest composers, like the girl shown here, have even scored hits with The Worldwide Song Project!
Including catchy songs in lessons can help to boost youngsters' interest, hence my naughty nose picking song! Once a youngster's interest is roused the gift of music is theirs for life.

I generally teach in my studio near North Walsham but sometimes visit pupils within a few miles if circumstances keep them at home.

One of my pupils has passed his grade 6 exam with Distinction at the age of just 12, while Jim, in his eighties, has passed with Merit at the top grade (grade 8)! An adult student who's moving away has sent me the following unsolicited tribute: Tony, I want to say a huge thank you for all you have taught me and for making the lessons enjoyable! I couldn’t have wanted a better teacher.
